Many predict that the world will soon experience an economic depression, brought on by a variety of factors, but most particularly Peak Oil – the lessening production of petroleum. (For full information on Peak Oil, see Dry Dipstick – www.drydipstick.com)

No matter what happens to the economy, you’ll probably still need income. Work continues even in hard times. Sadly, and ironically, at a time when so much more needs to be done, it gets harder and harder for people to actually find jobs.

We can guess what type of jobs might disappear first as a result of decreasing oil supplies and economic collapse–such as housing construction, highway construction, just about any kind of construction for that matter, credit cards, banking, stocks and bonds, overnight tourism (daytrip may do okay), airlines (but bus and maybe even railroads may do well), the automobile industry and all its related businesses, hotels and motels, drive-through fast-food, car washes, chain stores dependent on cheap goods from China, and so on–but it’s probably more useful to try and predict what type of jobs and skills will be most needed.

We assume they will involve basic needs–food, water, health, and the like. There will probably be much more focus on repairing items than replacing them, so cottage industries like small appliance repair and clothing repair could do well. Escapist entertainment and fads were thriving during the Great Depression of the 1930s and there’s no reason to believe similar, low-cost businesses might not do equally well now.

But you shouldn’t count on someone hiring you. Plan now to work for yourself, providing goods and services to people who need them.

We can’t make any guarantees, but the following ideas are good possibilities. And they should get you thinking in the right direction about other likely businesses.

Barter Network

When people don’t have money, they do barter. They’ve always got stuff–and skills–that they can exchange. Set up a barter network, help others do it, and take a small cut of the action.

Beer and Wine Making

No matter how hard times get, people will still want beer and wine. If you can turn the stuff out at home, you’ve got an endless supply of barter material.

Bicycle Sales / Repairs

The first thing you should do right now is run out and buy as many used bicycles as you can. Used bike sales and repairs should do very well. You could even add motorcycles and scooters, because of the good gas mileage they get.

Car Repair

While this is no time to be in the new car sales business, car repair should be fine as people try to keep their existing vehicles running as long as they can–and as long as they can afford the gas. Consider basic car repair/maintenance where you go to the customer’s home to do the service. You might even have luck with ongoing maintenance contracts. You could also give car repair classes.

Cheap Luxuries

Even in hard times–actually particularly in hard times–people will want to spoil themselves now and then. But the luxury has to be cheap. It might be a special chocolate chip cookie, or delicious homemade candy. Or maybe it’s very special handmade giftwrapping paper. Or fragrant handmade soap or a hand-carved wooden toy.

Computer Repair

Computer repair and maintenance should do exceptionally well. People will no longer be running out to buy the latest upgrade (computer, monitor, printer, etc.) but will be more interested in keeping what they have working properly.

Delivery Service

It makes much more sense to pay a slight fee to have a store deliver a purchase to you than to get in your car and make a round trip to do it yourself. Smart store owners will offer free delivery in order to attract customers. (On a larger scale, companies like UPS and FedEx should do well.)

Entertainment

People want to be entertained, particularly when times are tough. Consider bringing together talented people to offer live entertainment in neighborhood or community locations. You probably won’t get rich but you’ll have a good time, and you and the entertainers will end up with more money than when you started.

Errand Service

On a more personal level than a delivery service, errand services can combine your needs with similar needs of others, to provide services cheaper than you could do them yourself. This might be pickup and delivery, but could also include banking, taking children to after-school classes and sports or pets to the veterinarian, and a variety of other activities.

Fads

It would be nice to invent, and get rich off, the next fad. But you can also stay in touch with the culture, and offer low-cost ways for your community to enjoy those fads.

Farming

You don’t have to have a huge farm to have a healthy farming business. An acre of land and a lot of hard work will produce what you need for a small-scale business. Consider also specialty items such as mushrooms, herbs, or sprouts. Because of the many uses of hemp, that will be a great crop once it’s legal–or at least possible without enforcement–to grow.

Herbal Treatments

You can grow, or forage for, herbs and use them to make healing concoctions, syrups, salves, teas, and a variety of other healthy items. You could also use flowers for Aromatherapy.

Home Repair

People will have to do what they can to keep everything in their home in working order. If you have carpentry, plumbing, electrical and a wide variety of other relevant skills, you can be a big help to those people. You might even have success at teaching these skills to others.

Instruction

You name it, someone will be interested in it. Whether it’s using tools, playing music, sewing or storytelling. The lessons likely to do best will be those focused on basic essentials, saving money and protecting health, such as gardening, food canning, inexpensive home cooking, yoga and other health exercises, meditation and relaxation, herb foraging and use, and pet care.

Instructional Video Library

Considering setting up an instructional video library; videos and DVDs that teach people various skills, whether they’re home or car repair, sewing, musical, language or any of hundreds of other subjects.

Raising Chickens and Rabbits

Lots of people might start their own gardens, but very few will raise their own meat. You can take advantage of that by raising chickens and rabbits-and other critters if you’ve got room.

Rental Library

Libraries aren’t just for videos and books. Consider offering specialty kitchenware, car and woodworking tools, games, toys, household repair tools, gardening equipment and literally anything else you can think of.

Seamstress / Tailor / Clothing Alterations

In hard times, people can’t afford to simply buy new clothes to replace slightly worn clothing. Darning socks will be back again. Sewing and knitting skills are no longer common, nor are sewing machines. Anyone with these skills will be much in demand.

Small Appliance / Electronics Repair

Till now it’s been cheaper to throw away a broken radio, telephone, blender, microwave, coffee maker and similar appliances than to have it repaired. That time is over. With the end of cheap imports, and loss of income, people will no longer be able to afford new items. They will either have to do without, or find someone with the skills to fix them.

Soap Making

Everybody needs soap. While there might not be a time when you can’t find soap to buy, you’ll save money, have some fun, and end up with an excellent barter item by making your own soap. Here are some more recipes. While you’re at it, here are some skin care recipes.

Toys and Games

There was a time when toys were not mass-produced plastic things. They were carefully crafted from wood, cloth and other natural materials, were treasured by the children who received them, and were passed down from generation to generation. Create some yourself, and you’ll have customers.

My Visit to the Tiger Temple

I just figured that since I just got home from volunteering that some future volunteers might want to be informed as what to expect when arriving.

First of all, I would like to say that this was an experience of a lifetime.
You will be handling tigers, both full grown and young (the cubs were about 9 months old when I was there, so they may be too large to be doing some of the things I might describe or there might be younger cubs by the time you arrive and so they may be doing different activities).

I would suggest bringing some basic medical supplies such as bandaids, gauze, hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol because chances are you will earn a tiger bite or scratch. These are very fun reminders of your trip as well as a very keen way to show off to your friends. Chances are that you will not be very clean when staying there so it is important to keep your wounds clean.
Also, don’t bring rolling luggage as I did because it is hell to lug around. Backpacks are suggested.

You can either take a taxi straight up to the temple or you can take the 81 bus out of Kanchanaburi and tell the driver to drop you off at the Tiger Temple. You will then have to hike about 3km to the temple gates. Rolling your suitcases 3km in the heat at 5 pm is not fun! When you arrive you will then be shown to your quarters. Females are on the main grounds. They have tile flooring, individual rooms with locks, mosquito nets, electricity, fans, bathrooms with toilets and showers, and sinks. Males have to continue hiking back into the jungle and we live where the monks do in huts. Females are not allowed back here. It is a cement hut with a porch and small “bathroom” attached. I will not lie, this is pretty much roughing it. There is no electricity and the “bathroom” consists of a thai toilet (a porcelein hole in the ground) a faucet used to flush the toilet or fill up buckets for laundry or taking bucket showers. In the hut you will be provided with candles, blankets, mats, and pup tents.

Now I hope this doesn’t scare you because just the chance to work with tigers like this is definetely worth these living conditions. And you typically only come here to sleep. Usually you can hang out at the canteen just outside of the temple, but be careful if you are staying late because they may lock the gate on you. Water is plenty, because the Wat bottles their own so it is not necessary to bring any from town. It is true that the monks only eat one meal a day, and that is breakfast which is a huge meal. However, there is free lunch for workers as well as tourists at the canteen during the day. This is usually noodles or pad thai. There is usually a drink vendor there who sells soft drinks. And dinner is provided to you as well because they drive to a nearby market to buy it. So there is really no need to worry about food, but I would still suggest stopping in Kanchanaburi for snacks or grabbing some KFC if you are tired of Thai food. I would also suggest renting a motorbike in Kanchanaburi. This is definetely worth it because there is a lot of dead time. We would check out local tourist spots such as an elephant camp and Sayok Noi waterfall. I would also definetely recommend taking a day off and visiting Erawon waterfall. You will need most of a day to do this 2 km hike up the mountain and swim in the different levels of the waterfall.

The typical day at the temple is simple. At 7am you go to the cub cages and clean the cages and bathe the cubs. At 8am you bring the cubs up to breakfast at the sala. (This is where we would get most of our time playing with the cubs.) At around 9am you bring the cubs back to their cages. You have dead time until 1pm. You could follow the workers around and possibly find some work to do or if you can use this time to explore. At 12:45, you bring the cubs to an waiting area where the tourists can get a better look at them. At 1pm, you bring the tigers down to the canyon. At the canyon you have several duties: Inform the new tourists as they come down about the rules of the canyon as well as giving out souvenirs for donations; go around with a worker and take pictures of the tourists with the larger tigers; take pictures for the tourists of the cubs playing in the water; also, you may choose to stay with the cubs by the pond in order to keep them in line and off of the other older tigers (I don’t suggest doing this for several days because if the cubs are not familiar with you and they are running around off a leash, they most likely will try to get you. After they are more comfortable with you, then I would recommend this.) The key is not to be afraid of them and if they do happen to wrap around your leg and bite, give them a few smacks on the top of the head and they will release. At 5pm you bring the tigers back to their cages and you are done for the day. At 7pm you are invited to go to the sala and join the monks for meditation, some white garments can usually be found at the female living quarters or you can just wear a white shirt and some loose pants.)

Also, if you have time, try to learn a little of the Thai language because there are only a few English speaking workers who speak thai and the abbott speaks pretty good English. This will make it easier, but don’t worry if you don’t know any because I didn’t and the workers will have fun teaching you Thai if you teach them English. In fact, some want to learn any other languages you can teach them. Well, I hope this helps to get an understanding of what a volunteer at the Tiger Temple goes through.

Improve Your Soccer Stamina

A fitter player and, more importantly, a fitter team can play at a faster pace for a longer period of time. Fitness and player stamina is what sets apart professional and part-time teams, especially when they play in all or nothing matches such as the FA Cup where there is no middle ground for a draw. Stamina training in soccer is just a party of getting and remaining fit for the entire season. A player requires strength to keep the ball and win the match and this means the player must be able to sprint, accelerate and move quickly around the field for 90 minutes.

The warm-up is an essential part of injury prevention, vital when your star player is earning 70,000 a week and will pick this up whether he plays or is sitting out injured. To improve your fitness and agility, start off with five minutes of jogging on the spot followed by high knees, heel flicks, jumping jacks and then five minutes of stretching. You can also perform press ups, squat thrusts, lateral raises by using dumbbells or resistance bands, crunches, dips and sit to stand using the dumbbells. Instead of running at a continuous pace, mix up the routine with running, jogging and sprinting in a random manner.

You can start by jogging for five minutes, then sprint for 20 yards, slow jog for 100 yards, cruise for 200 yards, backward running for 20 yards, turn and sprint for 30 yards, walk for 50 yards and then jog again for 300 yards more. When you finish your training session, stretch the hamstrings, groins, quads, calves and lower back for between 20 to 30 seconds to allow your muscles to recuperate properly.

Soccer demands a high level of stamina, thus endurance training is an essential part of any professional soccer training programme. It serves as a great confidence booster when you can see your opponent fading during the later stages of a match and you have reserves to use and take advantage of. Endurance training is a must that requires a solid aerobic base so that you remain active in the playing field for a long period of time.

Stamina fitness training for soccer players include activities like jogging, hill running, cycling and shuttle runs. It requires certain exercise equipments like cross-trainer, stair climbers and treadmills. Sprint training includes shuttle runs, relay runs, and the pattern of sprint-walk-jog. For sprinting, a strong drive is required. The upper body should be relaxed. Strength training includes circuit training and weight training.

You can easily perform some of the activities for improving your overall stamina:

A full squat with bodyweight
Clean and press seven-tenths of their weight overhead
Curl six-tenths of their weights
Hop 25km distance in 10 hops on each leg (if you are feeling especially masochistic!)
40 press-ups in one minute
40 bent-knee abdominals in one minute
40 squat thrusts in one minute
Eight chins (male) and three chins (female).

Stamina is developed by completing rounds of continuous activity at moderate intensities, performed for longer than three minutes. The general-endurance component of run-play training has a middle distance event where you carry out a cool run of 2000-3000 metres at around 70 to 75 per cent of maximal heart rate.

Stamina training also includes a distance events where you have to to try a cool run of 3000-5000 metres at about 70 to 75 per cent of maximal heart rate.

Power Personified With Massive Arms

Remember when you were in High School. So many characters and personalities. Big guys, big mouths, funny guys, funny gals and many many more one of a kind kids. Heres one I think youll relate to.

My first impression of Gillie was as 12 year old. He was so immense. I remember thinking that I did not want to be hit by him.
If I had Gillie on my team I knew I had an edge. A powerful advantage.

Gillie was the Paul Bunyon of my neighborhood. He had 20-22 biceps, and a neck almost as round. Weighing 220 pounds, he stood six feet one inch and had no fat on his body. Not an ounce of blubber. I had never seen any one like him in my life. He ambled when he walked. The kind of walk someone has when they know they have nothing to fear. His nickname was Mr Clean. He looked a lot like the cleaning icon. Except Gillie had no earring.

On the baseball diamond, Gillie was awesome. His fungo shots to the outfielders in pre game warm-ups touched parts of the sky usually reserved for small engine planes. He scared the other team. He looked like Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killabrew and Ted Kluzewski all rolled into one.

Smacking a softball was where Gillie excelled. His shots were legendary. He was one of a handful that hit the ball over the right field fence. The fence was 270 280 feet away and climbed 40 feet high. He was the only person I ever saw that hit a ball that soared over that fence onto Goldsmith Avenue. His hits seemed to gain height as they cleared the fence.

For me, Gillie always represented strength, dedication and just being a real good guy. He never used his size and strength to put others down. It was his way of building himself up. Whether he batted right handed or lefty you would always see the outfield back up and the infield shift to much deeper positions.

Stroke Rehabilitation: A Novel Treatment Pays Off

In a landmark study, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham used a randomized controlled trial — the gold standard method for evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment — to show that immobilizing the good arm of stroke patients and intensively exercising the weakened arm actually improved recovery, even when performed long after the stroke occurred. At one level, randomized controlled trials in the field of rehabilitation medicine have been so rare that the publication of each and every one should be applauded. At another level, the outcome of this study is so satisfying in terms of what we think we know about brain physiology (function) that even if the results turn out not to be true, they ought to be.

A controlled trial is one in which there is a comparison group of patients that is either untreated or is treated differently. When a controlled trial is also randomized, it means that upon entering the study, participants agree to be assigned to one group or the other based on the equivalent of a coin-toss. Randomization eliminates bias that might otherwise come from (knowingly or unknowingly) assigning more promising patients to one group and less promising patients to the other.

Publishing their results in the March 2006 online issue of Stroke, a medical journal, Edward Taub, PhD, and co-workers studied 21 patients treated with “constraint-induced movement therapy” (CI) and compared their outcomes to another 20 stroke patients who received placebo treatment.

In strokes a loss of circulation damages a portion of the brain, resulting in impairment of whatever mental or bodily function that part of the brain controls. Strokes often cause weakness in an arm with or without concurrent numbness. Strokes are the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S.

The researchers included stroke victims in their study who had mild to moderate impairment in use of their affected arms, but excluded those with severe impairment. The research subjects varied widely in age, averaging in their fifties. The investigators selected patients whose stroke had occurred a minimum of one year earlier with an average interval between stroke and treatment of 4.5 years. Patients with concurrent numbness were included, but those with poor walking or balance were excluded, as were patients with excessive confusion or too much additional impairment caused by other medical conditions.

The CI treatment was administered over a 2-week span, during which the good arm was immobilized about 90% of the time with an arm-sling and a hand-splint. CI patients had 10 weekday sessions with therapists, lasting 6 hours each. During those sessions, patients received one-on-one therapy that was individualized to their needs and abilities and involved specific, practical tasks of gradually increasing difficulty. The therapists praised patients each time their performances improved even just slightly. By contrast, placebo-treated patients received a more general program of physical fitness, cognitive and relaxation exercises over the same schedule.

The abilities of CI and placebo-treated patients were compared in two main ways. In one, the research subjects were videotaped in the laboratory while attempting specific tasks like holding a book, picking up a glass and brushing teeth. Their performances were rated by viewers who were purposely not told which treatment the subject received. The other rating, called the “real world outcome,” came from structured interviews of the patients and their caregivers concerning performance outside the treatment facility.

The researchers found significant improvements in CI-treated patients compared with both their own initial abilities and those of patients receiving placebo treatment. The CI patients showed a moderate improvement in their laboratory skills and a large improvement in use of the affected arms in their daily lives. Improvement was still evident 4 weeks after treatment, and even after 2 years in the 14 of 21 CI patients who could be retested at that time.

The researchers interpreted the improvement as due to two factors. The first factor, probably more important for faster gains, was in overcoming “learned non-use” of the weaker arm. The idea is that after a stroke, patients quickly learn to avoid using the weaker arm to a greater extent than its impairment might warrant, and CI training forces them to put it back into action. The second suspected factor, developing more slowly, was “neural plasticity” or actual rewiring of the brain. In neural plasticity surviving brain cells — previously uninvolved or less involved in controlling use of the arm — attempt to make up for the lost brain cells either by creating new contacts with other brain cells or by modifying the effectiveness of existing links.

In 1992 researchers at the Hammersmith Hospital in London used positron emission tomographic (PET) scans to examine patterns of brain use in stroke patients. PET scans are good at showing which parts of the brain are most engaged by specific tasks. Investigators compared PET scans in 10 patients who recovered from a stroke to those of 10 patients who never had a stroke. In this study subjects repeatedly moved one hand (which in the stroke patients was the affected hand) while their brains were being scanned. Compared to non-stroke patients, stroke patients used more areas on both sides of the brain to perform the requested movements, as if the surviving brain cells were trying to fill in for their fallen comrades.

Taub and collaborators at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke used similar methods to compare patterns of brain activation in 9 CI-treated stroke patients with those in 7 less-intensively treated stroke patients. In this 2003 study, CI-treated patients showed a shift in the extent to which different parts of the brain participated in moving the fingers of the weakened hand. Thus, CI treatment seemed to modify the brain pathways responsible for the finger movements.
